The health benefits of red wine have been debated for some time. Many believe that a glass each day is a valuable part of a healthy diet, while others think wine is. ![]() The Fatty Liver Diet Guide - Does it Work? A Personal Review. If you are like me, your prognosis of fatty liver disease might have come out of the blue. Sure, I was a bit overweight and not quite eating enough of the right foods. I was feeling tired a lot, but heck, I wasn’t exactly in my twenties. So when my doctor told me I have NAFLD (Non- Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease), I had to wonder if my time was up. Fortunately, that’s not the case at all. Doing an Internet search brought me to The Fatty Liver Diet Guide. It is rich in information that can help you reverse this disease. Written by a nurse specializing in the hepatology (liver) field named Dorothy Spencer, this book is the product of years of her active medical research and hospital work. I found out that millions of people around the world suffer from Fatty Liver Disease. ![]() In fact, studies estimate that nearly a third of the entire U. S. That’s because there’s almost no symptoms. Most cases, thankfully, won’t turn serious. This disease is an equal opportunity condition, affecting people of both genders, all nationalities and ages. There are two kinds of fatty Liver disease, and each has it’s own worsening variations: Alcoholic Liver Disease, or ALDNon- alcoholic Liver Disease, or NAFLDIt is estimated that approximately 1. You would think this would be an easy question to answer, but it's not, and that's because of this. ![]() The second type of fatty liver disease, non- alcoholic fatty liver disease, is the most prevalent cause of chronic liver disease in America today. This is what I had. You are considered to have Fatty Liver Disease if your liver is made up of more than 5- 1. In many cases, the disease is silent and sufferers may not even realize they have it. But for many others, it accounts for a wide range of undesirable symptoms. NASH – A Worse Form of The Disease.
It is important to know that there is a progression to a worsening condition of fatty liver disease, called NASH, for Non Alcoholic Steatohepatisis, This occurs in non- drinkers and leads to cirrhosis of the liver. This type can and sometimes does eventually cause permanent damage to the liver. Over time, the liver enlarges and the healthy cells are replaced with scar tissue (cirrhosis), which may lead to liver cancer, liver failure or other serious complications. Obviously, fatty liver disease can grow into a serious condition! Sadly, with our sedentary lifestyle and bad eating habits, all these types of fatty liver disease are becoming increasingly common. ![]() Do you have fatty liver disease? The big problem is, you may not even know you have it! ![]() ![]() What are the Symptoms of Fatty Liver Disease? You might have fatty liver disease if you have any or all of these symptoms: Feeling tired. Losing weight or losing your appetitefeeling weak. Nausea. Feeling confused or having trouble concentrating. In addition, people who suffer from fatty liver disease may also have these symptoms: Pain focused in the center or right upper part of the abdomen. Enlarged liver. Patches of dark skin discoloration, most often on the neck or underarm area. Sometimes a person with fatty liver disease may be able to diagnose it themselves if the symptoms are evident enough, but in most cases it may be picked up in routine lab tests. People with fatty liver disease will have elevated liver enzymes, but there is no way to know the progression of the disease except through a painful liver biopsy. Your doctor will likely say “you have evidence” of this condition. As you can see above, though, all symptoms are very general. Most of us often feel tired. You know what's more impressive than serving a woman wine during dinner? Serving her a glass of port afterward. Wine contains no fat, a trace amount of protein and a small amount of carbohydrates. I have been how to buy viagra in philippines on your reflux diet for several months with excellent results. Often, there is no pain. Nausea, feeling weak, and loss of appetite can be caused by many things. Only by going to a doctor for tests can you pinpoint the cause. The Fatty Liver Guide. Before I bought it, I saw that The Fatty Liver Diet Guide has been hailed by suffers as the ultimate go- to reference for help in treating or eliminating Fatty Liver Disease. It was either this guide or following a multitude of pamphlets my doctor gave me, which is basically “eat healthy and lose weight” (I bet we all heard this one before!)I needed something more precise. A detailed roadmap to follow. For half the price of a visit to the doctor, I got it (and it has a money back guarantee). ![]() ![]() The guide lays out a concise explanation of what exactly causes Fatty Liver Disease, as well as who is most at risk in developing it. This could be a handy thing to know in order to do a little preventive maintenance and avoid getting it. As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. For those who already suffer from Fatty Liver Disease, you will find a treasure trove of helpful information inside the guide – everything from eating the right diet to lifestyle changes and various techniques to reverse and manage the condition. It isn’t a complicated guide that requires someone with a Ph. D to read and understand. Instead, it lays out a simple, easy to understand and follow process that can help you get back on track to a healthy life. There is a couple technical terms, but these are words you’ll likely here from your doctor, so it’s best to memorize them. A couple points, though: Does the Fatty Liver Diet Guide make pie- in- the- sky promises that you can manage or reverse the condition with no effort on your part? No. Does the Fatty Liver Diet Guide claim to be a . But, one bonus is that the process is customizable to you and your lifestyle; meaning that you can follow it in an individualized way that will still deliver healthy results. What’s In the Guide? The book begins by talking about the liver – what it is and what it does. You can skip this section, but it’s good to know what’s up with your liver and why you need to change your lifestyle habits. By the way, it’s good for both types of the disease – alcoholic and non- alcoholic. Dorothy then explains how the liver processes the fat in your body. This should answer your questions on why your liver gets fatty in the first place. The next section discusses the disease itself . She also discusses the symptoms, and how doctors can determine if you have a fatty liver. Except for an actual liver biopsy, doctors can only guess at the stage of the condition based on certain signs in a blood test. You shouldn’t need a liver biopsy (which is painful and invasive anyway – a surgeon has to actually remove a piece of your liver) – for most patients, the possibility of having the disease is enough to begin treatment. The Treatment of Fatty Liver Disease. A liver- friendly, low fat and delicious meal. There is no magic pill to treat this disease. My doctor said “diet and exercise.”When I bought this book, I wanted to know a plan of action – and fortunately, the guide delivers this. Not quite a step- by- step plan, this does lay out what you need to do, and then gives you a plan. Step 1: Vitamins and Mineral supplements to begin taking. This is to help heal the liver. Also, what vitamins and minerals to avoid. What I didn’t realize is that an excess of certain vitamins can make my condition worse! Step 2: Developing a meal plan. Dorothy goes through a comprehensive list of what foods to take, what to eat in moderation, and what to avoid. She then provides you with sample meal plans for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as snacks. She has created for you a seven- day meal plan that maximizes the antioxidant properties of the food you will eat to help heal your liver. While alcohol must, of course, be completely removed for patients with alcoholic fatty liver disease, whose with the non- alcoholic version must still limit themselves. Thankfully, I’m a red wine drinker, but I cut out all alcohol anyway, and only drink one glass on the weekend. For those with the alcoholic version of the disease: you MUST stop all drinking now. I read in a forum about someone’s sister who had this disease, and stopped drinking. Her liver then went back to normal. But then she had a beer here, and a beer there. A year later, she died of liver failure, at the age of 3. What a horrible thing to read! Step 3: Exercise plan. You MUST begin exercising. Even if it’s just a daily walk, you have to begin doing more to help lose excess weight. However, she warns not to lose weight too fast – this will put your body into starvation mode, which actually worsens your condition. Alternative Treatments. The book then goes into alternative medicine and treatments, such as: Directions and a recipe for a liver flush, using epsom saltsherbal supplements such as milk thistle and vitamins. The final third of the book continues with your lifestyle roadmap – tips on exercising, and loads of low- fat and delicious recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Some Disappointments . It doesn’t, nor did I expect it to. This is exactly what you need to do . I did follow it, and soon understood why there is no “6 Week Plan.” That’s because everybody who reads this book will be at different stages of the disease. So, for some, it’ll take six weeks of disciplined lifestyle changes to reverse their condition, for others it’ll take six months. Plus, it’s not like after six weeks you can go back to your bad habits. This is a lifelong change, as your liver is susceptible to new damage if you decide to go back to sitting on the couch every day and go back to a high- fat diet. An occasional greasy meal is probably fine . I ended up drawing up some myself, though I did print out and pinned up the seven- day meal plan on my fridge. That plan really did help. So, Is This Guide Right For You? I would definitely say yes. It’s comprehensive and it gives valuable strategies to help reclaim your health and wellness. It will teach you how to avoid the foods that are unhealthy for your liver, which foods and supplements you should take to help reverse fatty liver disease, and what lifestyle changes you need to take to get back to health. Of course, if you aren’t satisfied with the results you’re getting from following the recommendations, you won’t be out a cent because it comes with a 1. Red Wine: Good or Bad? The health benefits of red wine have been debated for some time. Many believe that a glass each day is a valuable part of a healthy diet, while others think wine is somewhat overrated. Studies have repeatedly shown that moderate red wine consumption seems to lower the risk of several diseases, including heart disease. However, there is a fine line between moderate and excessive intake. This article takes a detailed look at red wine and its health effects. What is Red Wine and How is it Made? Red wine is made by crushing and fermenting dark- colored, whole grapes. There are many types of red wine, which vary in taste and color. Common varieties include Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet sauvignon, Pinot noir and Zinfandel. The alcohol content usually ranges from 1. This is mainly due to its high content of powerful antioxidants. The alcohol in wine is also believed to contribute some of the benefits of moderate wine consumption (1). Bottom Line: Red wine is made by fermenting dark- colored, whole grapes. It is high in antioxidants, and drinking moderate amounts has been shown to be good for health. The French Paradox. Red wine is often believed to be responsible for the “French paradox.”This phrase refers to the observation that the French have low rates of heart disease, despite consuming a lot of saturated fat and cholesterol (2). Some experts believed that red wine was the dietary agent protecting the French population from the harmful effects of these nutrients. However, new studies have shown that dietary cholesterol and saturated fat do not cause heart disease when consumed in reasonable amounts (3, 4). The true reason behind the good health of the French is probably the fact that they eat more whole foods and live overall healthier lifestyles. Bottom Line: Some people believe that red wine is responsible for the good health of the French population and that it is the main explanation for the French paradox. Red Wine Contains Powerful Plant Compounds and Antioxidants, Including Resveratrol. Grapes are rich in many antioxidants. These include resveratrol, catechin, epicatechin and proanthocyanidins (5). These antioxidants, especially resveratrol and proanthocyanidins, are believed to be responsible for the health benefits of red wine. Proanthocyanidins may reduce oxidative damage in the body. They may also help prevent heart disease and cancer (6, 7, 8). Resveratrol is found in grape skin. It is produced in some plants, as a response to damage or injury (9). This antioxidant has been linked with many health benefits, including fighting inflammation and blood clotting, as well as reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer. Resveratrol can also make test animals live longer (1. However, the resveratrol content of red wine is rather low. You would have to consume several bottles per day to reach the amount used in the animal studies. This is not recommended, for obvious reasons (1. If you’re drinking wine just for the resveratrol content, then getting it from a supplement may be a better idea. Bottom Line: The powerful plant compounds in red wine have been linked with many health benefits, including reduced inflammation, lower risk of heart disease and cancer, and extended lifespan. Red Wine May Lower the Risk of Heart Disease, Stroke and Early Death. Small amounts of red wine are linked to more health benefits than any other alcoholic beverage (5, 1. There seems to be a J- shaped curve that explains the relationship between wine intake and the risk of heart disease. People who drink approximately 1. However, higher intake increases the risk of heart disease dramatically (1. Drinking small amounts of red wine may reduce the risk of heart disease by helping to retain the “good” HDL cholesterol in the blood. Oxidative damage and the oxidation of the “bad” LDL cholesterol may also be reduced by up to 5. Some studies indicate that populations already at a high risk of heart disease, like the elderly, may benefit even more from moderate wine consumption (2. Furthermore, drinking 1. However, high amounts may increase the risk. Other Health Benefits of Drinking Red Wine. Red wine has been linked with several other health benefits, many of which are attributed to its potent antioxidants. Red wine consumption is linked to: Reduced risk of cancer: Studies have shown that moderate wine consumption is linked with a decreased risk of several cancers, including colon, basal cell, ovary and prostate cancers (3. Reduced risk of dementia: Drinking 1. However, there are also some important negative aspects to consider, which are discussed below. Bottom Line: Moderate red wine consumption may reduce the risk of several cancers, dementia and depression. It may also increase insulin sensitivity and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in women. Negative Health Effects of Drinking Too Much Alcohol. While a moderate amount of red wine may provide health benefits, consuming too much alcohol can cause devastating health effects. These include: Alcohol dependence: Drinking alcohol regularly may become out of control and lead to alcoholism (4. Liver cirrhosis: When more then 3. End- stage liver disease, called cirrhosis, is life threatening (4. Increased risk of depression: Heavy drinkers are at a much higher risk of depression than moderate or non- drinkers (3. Weight gain: Red wine contains twice the amount of calories as beer and sugary soft drinks. Excessive consumption may therefore contribute to high calorie intake and make you gain weight (4. Increased risk of death and disease: Drinking a lot of wine, even only 1. High alcohol intake has also been linked with an increased risk of premature death (2. Bottom Line: An excessive intake of alcoholic beverages may cause alcohol dependence, liver cirrhosis and weight gain. It may also increase the risk of depression, disease and premature death. Should You Drink Red Wine? If Yes, How Much? If you like drinking red wine, there is no need to worry unless if you are exceeding the recommended amount. In Europe and America, moderate red wine consumption is considered to be (4. Drinking this amount of red wine in addition to other alcoholic beverages could easily put you in the range of excessive consumption. If you have a history of substance abuse, then you should probably avoid wine and any other alcoholic beverage completely. Also be very careful if you have a family history of alcoholism. Bottom Line: Moderate intake of red wine is defined as 1- 2 glasses per day. It is also recommended that you have at least 1. Much of the low- carb and paleo reasoning revolves around insulin. To quote a paleo blogger, . Carbs make our insulin go up, but so does protein. In 1. 99. 7, an insulin index of foods was published, ranking 3.
Researchers compared a large apple and all its sugar, a cup of oatmeal packed with carbs, a cup and a half of white flour pasta, a big bun- less burger with no carbs at all, to half of a salmon fillet. As you can see in the graph in my video Paleo Diets May Negate Benefits of Exercise, the meat produced the highest insulin levels. Researchers only looked at beef and fish, but subsequent data showed that that there. Thus, protein and fat rich foods may induce substantial insulin secretion. In fact, meat protein causes as much insulin release as pure sugar. So, based on the insulin logic, if low- carbers and paleo folks really believed insulin to be the root of all evil, then they would be eating big bowls of spaghetti day in and day out before they would ever consume meat. There's a growing movement of surgery centers and specialists that list their prices and don't take insurance. Unflavoured Pure Whey Protein They are correct in believing that having hyperinsulinemia, high levels of insulin in the blood like type 2 diabetics have, is not a good thing, and may increase cancer risk. But if low- carb and paleo dieters stuck to their own insulin theory, then they would be out telling everyone to start eating plant- based. Vegetarians have significantly lower insulin levels even at the same weight as omnivores. This is true for ovo- lacto- vegetarians, lacto- vegetarians, and vegans. Meat- eaters have up to 5. Researchers from the University of Memphis put a variety of people on a vegan diet (men, women, younger folks, older folks, skinny and fat) and their insulin levels dropped significantly within just three weeks. And then, just by adding egg whites back to their diet, their insulin production rose 6. In a study out of MIT, researchers doubled participants. Because the researchers weren? Low carb advocates, such as Dr. Westman is the author of the new Atkins books. Atkins died obese with, according to the medical examiner, a history of heart attack, congestive heart failure, and hypertension. Westman was wrong in his assumption. There is no significant drop in insulin levels on very low- carb diets. Instead, there is a significant rise in LDL cholesterol levels, the number one risk factor for our number one killer, heart disease. Atkins is an easy target though. No matter how many “new” Atkins diets that come out, it. What about the paleo diet? The paleo movement gets a lot of things right. They tell people to ditch dairy and doughnuts, eat lots of fruits, nuts, and vegetables, and cut out a lot of processed junk food. But a new study published in the International Journal of Exercise Science is pretty concerning. Researchers took young healthy people, put them on a Paleolithic diet along with a Cross. Fit- based, high- intensity circuit training exercise program. ![]() If you lose enough weight exercising, you can temporarily drop your cholesterol levels no matter what you eat. You can see that with stomach stapling surgery, tuberculosis, chemotherapy, a cocaine habit, etc. Just losing weight by any means can lower cholesterol, which makes the results of the Paleo/Crossfit study all the more troubling. After ten weeks of hardcore workouts and weight loss, the participants. And it was even worse for those who started out the healthiest. Those starting out with excellent LDL. Exercise is supposed to boost our good cholesterol, not lower it. The paleo diet. Exercise is supposed to make things better. Please see my video Does Cholesterol Size Matter? In health,Michael Greger, M. D. PS: If you haven. Why You Should Think Twice About Vegetarian and Vegan Diets. Brand X Pictures/Stockbyte/Thinkstock. There are many reasons why people choose to go vegetarian or vegan. Some are compelled by the environmental impact of confinement animal feeding operations (CAFO). Others are guided by ethical concerns or religious reasons. I respect these reasons and appreciate anyone who thinks deeply about the social and spiritual impact of their food choices. It is this last reason that I’d like to address in this article. This idea has been so thoroughly drilled into our head that few people even question it anymore. But is this really true? Plant- based diets emphasize vegetables, which are quite nutrient dense, and fruits, which are somewhat nutrient dense. However, they also typically include large amounts of cereal grains (refined and unrefined) and legumes, both of which are low in bioavailable nutrients and high in anti- nutrients such as phytate, and they eschew organ meats, meats, fish and shellfish, which are among the most nutrient- dense foods you can eat. Several studies have shown that both vegetarians and vegans are prone to deficiencies in B1. EPA & DHA, and fat- soluble vitamins like A & D. Let? Find out! Vitamin B1. B1. 2 deficiency is especially common in vegetarians and vegans. The takeaway is that the most recent studies using more sensitive techniques for detecting B1. B1. 2 deficient, compared to just 5% of omnivores. B1. 2 deficiency can cause numerous problems, including: Fatigue. Lethargy. Weakness. Memory loss. Neurological and psychiatric problems. Anemia. And much more. Studies have shown that kids raised until age 6 on a vegan diet are still B1. In one study, the researchers found. Any defect in this area may have far- reaching consequences for individual functioning. A common myth amongst vegetarians and vegans is that it. But plant foods said to contain B1. B1. 2 analogs called cobamides that block the intake of, and increase the need for, true B1. There are a few vegetables listed in this paper that have higher levels of bioavailable calcium, but it. This suggests that trying to meet your daily calcium needs from plant foods alone (rather than dairy products or bone- in fish) might not be a great strategy. Iron. Vegetarians and omnivores have similar levels of serum iron, but levels of ferritin. Moreover, although vegetarians often have similar iron intakes to omnivores on paper, it is more common for vegetarians (and particularly vegans) to be iron deficient. For example, this study of 7. Germany found that 4. Plant- based forms of iron are also inhibited by other commonly consumed substances, such as coffee, tea, dairy products, supplemental fiber, and supplemental calcium. This explains why vegetarian diets have been shown to reduce non- heme iron absorption by 7. This is another case where bioavailability is important; many plant foods that contain zinc also contain phytate, which inhibits zinc absorption. Vegetarian diets tend to reduce zinc absorption by about 3. One study suggested that vegetarians may require up to 5. In this context, an essential fatty acid is one that can. However, an increasing body of research has highlighted the benefits of the long- chain omega- 3 fatty acids EPA & DHA. These fatty acids play a protective and therapeutic role in a wide range of diseases: cancer, asthma, depression, cardiovascular disease, ADHD, and autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. While it is possible for some alpha- linolenic acid from plant foods to be converted into EPA & DHA, that conversion is poor in humans: between 5- 1. EPA and 2- 5% for DHA. Fat- soluble vitamins play numerous and critical roles in human health. Vitamin A promotes healthy immune function, fertility, eyesight and skin. Vitamin D regulates calcium metabolism, regulates immune function, reduces inflammation and protects against some forms of cancer. These important fat- soluble vitamins are concentrated, and in some cases found almost exclusively, in animal foods: primarily seafood, organ meats, eggs and dairy products. Some obscure species of mushrooms can provide large amounts of vitamin D, but these mushrooms are rarely consumed and often difficult to obtain. Plants contain beta- carotene, the precursor to active vitamin A (retinol). While beta- carotene is converted into vitamin A in humans, the conversion is inefficient. To get the same amount from plant foods, you. Moreover, traditional cultures consumed up to 1. RDA for vitamin A. It would be nearly impossible to get this amount of vitamin A from plant foods without juicing or taking supplements. But don’t vegetarians live longer than omnivores? At this point you might be thinking, “Well, so what if plant- based diets are lower in some nutrients. Everyone knows vegetarians live longer than omnivores!” While it’s true that some observational studies suggest that vegetarians and vegans enjoy longer lifespans, these studies were plagued by the “healthy user bias”. The healthy user bias is the scientific way of saying that people who engage in one behavior that is perceived as healthy (whether it is or not) are more likely to engage in other behaviors that are healthy. For example, vegetarians tend to be more health conscious on average than general population; they are less likely to smoke or drink excessively and more likely to exercise, eat fruits and vegetables and take care of themselves. The healthy user bias is one of the main reasons it. For example, say a study shows that eating processed meats like bacon and hot dogs increases your risk of heart disease. They also drink and smoke more, exercise less and generally do not take care of themselves very well. How do we know, then, that it. In other words, instead of comparing the “average” meat eater (who tends to be less health conscious) with the “average” vegetarian (who tends to be more health conscious), what happens when you compare vegetarians and omnivores that are both health- conscious? Thankfully, we have a study that did just that. It compared the mortality of people who shopped in health food stores (both vegetarians and omnivores) to people in the general population. This was a clever study design. People who shop in health food stores are more likely to be health conscious, regardless of whether they eat meat, which reduces the likelihood that the study results will be thrown off by the “healthy user bias”. What did the researchers find? Both vegetarians and omnivores in the health food store group lived longer than people in the general population. Nor was there any difference in rates of heart disease or stroke between the two groups. These long- chain omega fats are found exclusively in marine algae and fish and shellfish, so the only way to get them on a vegetarian diet would be to take a microalgae supplement (which contains DHA) or bend the rules and take fish oil or cod liver oil as a supplement. Still, while it may be possible. Vegan diets are low in B1. A & D, calcium, and EPA and DHA. This explains why some people seem to do well for years on these diets, while others develop problems very quickly. From an evolutionary perspective, is difficult to justify a diet with low levels of several nutrients critical to human function. While it may be possible to address these shortcomings through targeted supplementation (an issue that is still debated), it makes far more sense to meet nutritional needs from food. This is especially important for children, who are still developing and are even more sensitive to suboptimal intake of the nutrients discussed in this article. Unfortunately, many are not aware of the potential for nutrient deficiencies posed by their dietary choices. I hope this article can serve as a resource for anyone on a plant- based diet, whether they choose to start eating meat (or animal products, in the case of vegans) again or not. As in all Low Carb diets the key is to eat low carbs to try to get the blood sugar levels on a stable and low level. With low blood sugar less insulin is “produced” and less fat is stored in your body. The body uses the fat as fule instead of carbs and if you are overweight you starts loosing body fat. I will not go deeper into the scientific parts of this diet. I am a practical guy and I will focus on what to eat and how to prepare it. Andreas Eenfeldt (the Diet Doctor) has a blog with a lot of detailed information about the theories behind the low carb diets and especially LCHF. Please visit his site for more information. You can find the link to the right side amongst the other good links to pages in English I try to visit as often as I can. Benefits from Low Carb diets. If you are starting on a heavy overweight you will most probably loose a lot of weight if you follow a “strict” LCHF diet. Aside from weight loss a lot of people experience several other health benefits. Diabetes (some ends up with no medication at all!), allergies gets better, a lot of digestive problems gets better, mood swings gets better (no blood sugar issues) etc. I have not really experienced any other health benefits than weight loss and one reason is that I actually had no health issues before I started with LCHF? Well it is really individual what level you need to go to to get the weight loss and other health benefits. I would say that the goal should be below 2. This is for weight loss. For the health benefits you can probably be a little more “liberal” with the carbs but I would not recommend anyone to go above 5. My LCHFWhen I am coaching people I always want them to start as low as possible. If you have the level set at 5g you can “afford” to get a little higher sometimes. If you set your level at 2. I also thinks that it is easier to control your shopping and eating when aiming really low. There are never any discussion on what to eat or if this and that are allowed. It’s kind of “cleaner” to go really low. What to eat and what not to eat. I will try to make a really short list of “do eats” and “don’t eats”. The best way to get the idea is to follow my blog and see what I eat and not focus so much on what I do not eat. It’ really not that hard. Review by Brick fists. I get through a lot of this so can't afford top of the line protein all the time, this stuff is not bad at all, tastes pretty good, could mix a bit better but if used in a shaker mixes ok. LITTLE BIT OF ADVICE for those of you that also get through loads of this stuff this is what I do- I have a large tub which holds about 5kg (bulk powders do supply these) I buy 2. I mix together so that you are just left with a more subtle vanilla powder. I do this as with the flavoured you are getting through a lot of artificial sweetness that can't be good for you in large amounts. The unflavoured is free of these, contains more protein and is a little cheaper. Mainly gives me piece of mind that the drink is a little less unhealthy while still helping increase my gains. Review by Pao. During the past few years, I have tried different brands of protein. It is my first time trying bulk powders and I am really satisfied with the products, service, and platform in general. This flavour tastes amazing, it seems more like a treat for me. Review by Rob. This whey protein is so smooth, and mixes really well, not like other popular brands I've tried. The taste is great, I can't stop drinking them! Chocolate caramel is heavenly, with milk or water! The berries and cream one is good, but I can only have it with milk: water takes away the flavour. Looking forward to trying the birthday cake flavour! Probably won't buy the berries and cream again after I've finished with this lot. But then that might be personal taste. A delight to the senses. Comes with a scoop and a great reselable bag. Time to explore more flavours! Posted on 0. 9/0. Birthday Cake - oooh Review by Big D. Wow, the Birthday Cake flavour is ridiculously good. I've tried many flavours of whey protein with many different brands but BY FAR the best flavour I've ever had. That first sip was just orgasmic. Chocolate is also good! I bought a small 5. Birthday Cake pouch just to try but after that experience it will most definitely be my next 5kg bag. Put the right stuff in the tank to get the best results out of it right? Well since trying my first pack Whey has become a staple in my day to day diet and I wouldnt buy it from anywhere but here; prices are good (there are always discounts), mixes well with water & /or milk (with so many different uses) and the taste selection are completely on point! As others have said tastes are a personal thing so opinions vary but so far Ive tried quite a few but am aiming to get through the list. VANILLA is a great foundation point, enjoyable taste not too sweet. RASBERRY goes great in morning smoothies (though not as keen on its own) as does the COCONUT & PINEAPPLE (also great as a shake though coconut than pineapple). TIRAMISU I wouldnt buy again, very odd flavor, drinkable but odd. CHOC & MINT was tasty as a shake better with milk & slightly indulgent ; ) aaaand BIRTHDAY CAKE is one of my all- time favorites, so glad they made it permenant stock, very tasty, good for a sweet tooth but not overpowdering. Review by mj. 97. I have never ordered from Bulk Powders before and found this protein was a great quality and flavour! Previously i have paid . Without a doubt better than any other protein powder on the market. Makes a super smooth shake without the fuss. Tried the chocolate flavour first and loved it. Have just ordered birthday cake! I have tried a number of different whey proteins and Bulk Powders really have found a way to top them all. Don't mess with other products and just get this. Review by Al. The whey powder is very good quality and very smooth, although the Speculoos flavour is a tad too sweet for me, I found that adding a little bit of orange juice reduces the sweetness and improves the flavour. For anyone wondering what it generally tastes like, imagine liquefied cinnamon rolls (Posted on 0. Amazing!!! Review by JJ. Got chocolate cookie. Tastes amazing couldn't recommend it more! Great price great taste! I just ordered birthday cake and cannot wait. After recent operation was looking for additional protein into my diet. It's smooth and nice quality but as previous customers said you have to be careful with flavour choices. Everybody have different taste therefore some flavours some people like and some not. I bought few flavours. Birthday cake is nice. Coconut& pineapple is more pineapple than coconut and very sweet even though I put more water than instructed. Tiramisu is undrinkable for me, I found it's very weird taste. And didn't try unflavoured one yet. Used Klarna payment which is also very convenient. Good customer service as I was asking for an advice. Shame they don't do sample packages as some companies that you can try flavours before buying. Review by Beca Jane. My partner and I recently switched to Bulk Powders, after months of trying to find something of it's standard here in the UK at that price! We are both very into our fitness, and protein powders are a very important part of our fitness regime, and Bulk Powders is the best! Even better than some of the more 'expensive' 'body building' style proteins. The only difference is the fancy packaging. I personally usually get quiet bloated from protein powders, but not from Bulk Powders, in particular this protein. It mixes really well with water and there are no lumps at all, after shaking for a few seconds. The flavours are amazing, too! We have tried many flavours, the peanut butter, birthday cake, berries and cream, apple crumble and custard, chocolate, chocolate and caramel and rhubarb and custard. My personal favourite is the birthday cake, and the apple crumble and custard, but I have a very sweet tooth so didn't rate the peanut butter. However, my partner LOVES the peanut butter and just purchased a 2. Defiantly do it! You won't be disappointed. Bulk Powders = fantastic! There is no lumps and it's very smooth, the chocolate flavour is nice in flavour but sweet. Will purchase again or may try another flavour (Posted on 1. Unflavoured Whey Good Review by MOC. Will purchase many times again. It mixes well and has great protein content per serving. If you consume this daily I would avoid the unflavoured option as it doesn't taste all that good. Otherwise great product. I had seen that my husband had bought this product before, so I thought I would give it a try, as he recommended I use it following my gym sessions (I am quite new to this whole thing). I bought tiramisu flavour to give myself a fighting chance of liking it, but I have to admit that I wasn't expecting much. I mixed it with skimmed milk and used my new shaker and it was lovely, there were no lumps and it was really tasty. I am looking forward to trying other flavours too, but I can really recommend the tiramisu one. Used the Chocolate, Chocolate Cookies, Vanilla and others, I recently tried the White Chocolate and this is the first to disappoint. It doesn't taste of White Chocolate and has a vile aftertaste.. Other than this flavour (and others that may be the same which I haven't bought), 5/5 product. Review by Robbie. Probably one of the smoothest proteins powders on the market to date. Very consistent with great flavours too. However you need to be careful when picking the flavour as in my opinion some of them are not very enjoyable at all! I do NOT recomend Peanut butter at all! I love peanut butter but the protein powder version here is just undrinkable! I would recommend to try the unflavoured or banana. Unflavoured is surprisingly tasty as it has nice milky natural taste and doesn't taste bitter! Definitely would recommend this product! Ideal and I recommend to anyone looking for quality whey! Not artificial or over powering. The poweeer itself mixes very easily and with little effort, no lumps or dry bits to be had. I've purchased lots of different protein powders and so far I feel Bulk Powders is the best for quality, protein content, price and flavour. Review by Ldylm. This is the nicest unflavoured protein, it's got a lovely milky taste and consistency. I usually add ice to it and blitz it up. The protein content is pretty fab too, this is something I'll be ordering again. It's also lovely mixed into porridge. I ordered chocolate orange, great flavour, mixes well, all in all 5 out of 5 (Posted on 0. Delicious and Great Value Review by Chris. Ordered 5kg of the chocolate peanut for ! Already recommended it to everyone I've talked to!! Review by Steve. 91. This protein is the best I've ever tried, and the best value too! Mixes very well and the flavours are great - my favourites are the Berries & Cream, and the Lemon Meringue! Not overly sweet which is great in my opinion (Posted on 2. Awesome! Review by Kieth. Delivered the next day. So smooth, not granular at all. I mixed the chocolate flavour with almond milk and it tastes like chocolate pudding. Review by Mal G. I bought this whey powder in a few different flavors at this stage, each is good without being too sweet& sickly. Apart from using as a protein shake, I've being adding 3 scoops powder, coconut oil, egg, sultanas, almond butter, honey and chia seeds. To make protein bars. Just mix all together and bake for 6mins. Thanks. Nice consistency whether mixed with milk or water. I usually use yoghurt etc on my cereals, however I tried this yesterday instead and it's perfect, tastes a little like Almond milk or sweet soya milk. In my opinion tastes GREAT and mixes well! I am trying to loose fat and gain muscle so I recently ordered pure whey isolate 9. I just ordered the vanilla and peaches and cream really looking forward to it! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED IT! Don't get high quantities so get 5. Review by Roisin. M. Love this protein powder, I've used Unflavoured, Chocolate Cookies and Raspberry. So far Raspberry is my favourite. Mixes well, tastes lovely. Unbeaten value for money. My best advice stick with vanilla or banana, mix with some milk and you've got yourself a nice milkshake. Can't go wrong with basic flavors! Randomization was stratified by sex and presence of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Both interventions included small group meetings (6 to 1. Meetings lasted 1 to 2 hours and consisted of study measurements followed by group counseling led by a registered dietitian (A. C.), a research assistant (J. B.), and a physician (W. S. Y.). The counseling sessions followed a predetermined syllabus of topics (eg, nutrition label reading, eating out) that were parallel between the 2 interventions but specific to diet. All participants were advised to exercise on their own for 3. Participants and study personnel were not blinded to treatment assignment. As participants approached their goal weight or if cravings threatened their adherence to the diet, they were advised to add approximately 5 g of carbohydrates to their daily intake each week until weight was maintained or cravings diminished. Body weight was measured using the same calibrated scale (Tanita Corp, Arlington Heights, Illinois) at each visit at the same time of day, with the participant wearing light clothing and no shoes. Blood pressure and pulse were measured twice at each visit in the nondominant arm using an automated digital cuff (Omron Corp, Vernon Hills, Illinois) after the participant was sitting for 5 minutes. The mean of the 2 readings was used in analyses. Similarly, waist circumference was measured twice at the skin surface at the level of the umbilicus using a nonelastic tape. Urinary ketones were measured at each visit from a fresh urine specimen. Diet adherence was measured using 4- day food records (including 2 weekend days) at baseline and weeks 2, 1. Participants were given verbal and written instructions regarding record completion. A registered dietitian (A. C. Self- administered questionnaires were completed at group visits to assess medication changes, physical activity level, and adverse effects. Blood and urine samples were obtained after at least 8 hours of fasting at baseline and at weeks 2, 1. Processing and testing of samples were performed by the central laboratory of the medical center following standardized techniques; LDL- C level was calculated using the Friedewald equation. Statistical analysis. The primary outcome was percentage change in body weight. The sample size estimate, however, was based on the secondary outcome of mean change in LDL- C level because it has been considered a safety concern for the LCKD and has more stringent sample size requirements. Based on previous data, a 2- sided type 1 error rate of 0. L absolute difference between the 2 interventions in mean LDL- C level change from baseline to 4. This estimate provided greater than 9. Sample size calculations assumed a 3. Baseline variables of the 2 interventions were compared using unpaired t tests for continuous variables and . The primary analysis for outcomes was performed according to intention- to- treat principles; all participants who were randomized and had at least 1 outcome data measurement collected were included in analyses according to their randomized allocation. Subjects who failed to attend their initial small group visit were unaware of their randomization assignment, did not have outcome data collected, and therefore, were not included in analyses. To compare categorical outcomes between groups, we used the Pearson . For continuous, longitudinal outcomes, we used linear mixed models to test hypotheses of treatment differences over time. For body measurement and vital sign models, we used a random coefficient approach with time and treatment group included as fixed effects with linear, quadratic, or cubic time- by- treatment group interaction terms as appropriate. In addition, the proportions of participants in each intervention who achieved levels of weight loss (< 5%, 5% to < 1. Longitudinal models used all available data, including data from participants who had missing observations and/or were lost to attrition; these models yield unbiased estimates of parameters when missing outcome data are assumed to be ignorable, ie, the missing values may be related to either observed covariates or response variables but not related to the unobserved values. Because there were no estimable small group effects, the presented analyses do not incorporate adjustment for clustering. Statistical analyses were performed using SAS software version 9. SAS Institute Inc, Cary, North Carolina) and S- PLUS version 7 (Insightful Corp, Seattle, Washington). There were few serious adverse events that may have been related to the intervention: 1 LCKD participant was hospitalized for syncope attributed to excessive antihypertension medication and 2 O. The interventions also had comparable beneficial effects on most measures of cardiovascular disease risk, including waist circumference, fasting serum lipid profiles, and C- reactive protein. The LCKD had a more favorable effect on blood pressure than the O. The improvement in blood pressure in the LCKD group (. These patterns of weight loss and regain are similar to previous trials that compared the LCKD with an LFD without adjunctive weight loss medication over 1 year. One potential mechanism for blood pressure improvement is that the LCKD may have a diuretic effect. In a previous study, we found that total body water decreased more sharply over the first 2 weeks with the LCKD than the LFD, but the levels remained parallel thereafter. Another mechanism may be related to lower serum insulin levels seen with the LCKD; hyperinsulinemia has been associated with sodium retention, proliferation of vascular smooth muscle, increased sympathetic nervous system activity, and diminished release of nitric oxide from the endothelium. In a meta- analysis of studies comparing the LCKD with an LFD, changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure favored the LCKD but reached statistical significance for systolic blood pressure only. They also experienced reductions in a number of biological indicators (biomarkers) that suggest a reduction in the risk of developing chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. A further study in 2. The increasing popularity of the 5: 2 diet should lead to further research of this kind. Evidence about other forms of IFThere is some degree of evidence about the potential benefits of other forms of IF – albeit with some limitations. It should be stressed that our assessment of the evidence was confined to entering a number of keywords into Google Scholar and then looking at a small number of studies which we felt would be useful to explore further. We did not carry out a systematic review (though arguably, it would be useful for researchers to do so). So the information provided below should be taken in the spirit of us trying to provide an introduction to some of the evidence and science of IF – not an exhaustive . Is there any evidence that intermittent fasting aids weight loss? One of the most recent pieces of research on intermittent fasting is a 2. PDF, 2. 91kb) that recruited 3. After an initial two- week period they were then given a combination diet of low- calorie liquid meals for six days of a week (similar to Slim Fast diet products) and then asked to fast for one day a week (comsuming no more than 1. After eight weeks, on average, the women lost around 4kg (8. However, there are a number of limitations to consider when looking at this as evidence that it might be a generally beneficial thing to do for most ordinary people, including that: These women may have had increased motivation to stick with the diet because they knew their weight would be monitored (this is a psychological effect that slimming clubs make use of). The women had been told that they were at risk of heart disease. It is uncertain how well most of us would cope with such an extreme diet. The follow- up period was short – just two months. It is not clear whether this diet would be sustainable in the long term or whether it could cause any side effects. A much larger sample – including men – is required to see if intermittent fasting would be effective in most overweight or obese people. Is there any evidence intermittent fasting increases lifespan? There is quite a wide range of work on the effects of IF on combating the effects of ageing, but almost all of these studies involved either rats, mice or monkeys. One big problem with studies in animals – particularly rodents – is that they are only expected to live for a few years. While this makes them ideal subjects for longevity studies, carrying out similar, more useful experiments in humans, requires decades- long research to gain credible results. In an unsystematic look at the evidence, we find only one study involving humans: a 2. PDF, 6. 5kb) of an experiment actually carried out in 1. Spain. In this 1. The first group (the control group) ate a normal diet. The second group (the IF group) ate a normal diet one day and then a restricted diet (estimated to be around 9. After three years there were 1. IF group. This study is again limited by the small sample size meaning that the differences in death are more likely to be the results of a statistical fluke. Also, many experts would feel uneasy about issuing dietary guidelines based on a study over half a century old with unclear methods. It is unlikely that this experiment could be repeated today – denying food to elderly people in residential care is unlikely to be looked at kindly by an ethics committee. Is there any evidence intermittent fasting prevents cognitive decline? It seems that all of the studies on the supposed protective effects of IF against conditions that can cause a decline in cognitive function (such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease) involve animals. For example, a 2. PDF, 8. 43kb) involved mice that had been genetically engineered to develop changes in brain tissue similar to those seen in people with Alzheimer’s disease. Mice on an IF diet appeared to experience a slower rate of cognitive decline than mice on a normal diet (cognitive function was assessed using a water maze test). While the results of these animals tests are certainly intriguing, animal studies have inherent limitations. We can never be sure that the results will be applicable in humans. Is there any evidence that intermittent fasting prevent diseases? Much of the published research into the potential preventative effects of IF involve measuring biological markers associated with chronic disease, such as insulin- like growth factor- I (IGF- I) – known to be associated with cancer. Using these kinds of biological surrogates is a legitimate way to carry out research, but they do not guarantee successful real- world outcomes. For example, some medications that were found to lower blood pressure readings taken in laboratory conditions failed to prevent strokes once they had been introduced for use in the healthcare of patients in the world. A 2. 00. 7 clinical review (PDF, 1. IF in humans in terms of real- world health outcomes concluded that IF (specifically, alternative day fasting) may have a protective effect against heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. However, it concluded . Not everyone can safely fast. Other methods of weight loss include: Find recommended, simple, low cost ways to lose weight in the Live Well: lose weight pages. Edited by. As intermittent fasting seems to be becoming a central focus for visitors to my site, with a nice selection of men and women emailing me to ask how intermittent fasting could work for them, I’ve decided to write a short (ish) article on fasting to lose weight with the 1. Watch this video first. It’s been watched thousands of times on Youtube and has got some great reactions. I’m going to keep it short, give you an overview on the 1. I favour it over longer fasting periods, and how you can quickly and easily implement it into your lifestyle. In fact, 1. 6: 8 intermittent fasting is at the centre of my 1: 1 online nutrition coaching programs. If you’d like to know more, submit a consultation form HERE. I’ll briefly discuss a quick and dirty (but highly effective) way to set you calorie intake to meet your goals, and then onto the best ways to implement 1. Just as a pre- cursor to the article, I really want to make it clear that there are many many ways to lose weight. Intermittent fasting is in vogue at the moment, and there will always be people who really embrace intermittent fasting and make it their long- term eating habit. There have been a glut of books emerging in the last couple of years, such as the The 1. Hour Diet, The Fast Diet book, The 5: 2 Diet to name just a few. All can work, but for those wanting to fast to lose weight, and be sure of good results, we need to implement a bit of a stricter recording and monitoring system if we want to KNOW that it’s going to work for us. Once the weight is off, we can relax a bit and settle into a more intuitive way of eating. I’ve spent a lot of time practicing and learning the most effective ways of how to do a 1. I now teach, as the basis of my health and. It is definitely true to say that for many, particularly the insulin resistant, overweight and inactive, carbohydrate may not be the best way for them to make up the majority of their daily calories, due to spill- over to fat storage under certain circumstances. All macronutrients (protein, fat, carbs) can make you fat, there is no . That said, different foods have profoundly different effects on the hormonal environment, so fasting with zero consideration of food choices is likely to lead you to a place of less than desirable results. The problem many people have, and the media, government authorities, nutrition and health bodies, do little to help or address correctly, is knowing what to eat, how much, and in some cases, when? We are fed a bullshit story of ? Of course, overcoming the . Combine it with macro counting to estimate food intake, and it becomes an extraordinarily simple lifestyle that gets results. What I will say on the energy balance topic is that, even though the body does it’s best to maintain energy balance, homeostasis etc, if your metabolism is slowed, damanged, deranged, as is the case with many people, then energy balance becomes very difficult. The hormonal signalling that your body requires to maintain a healthy weight becomes impaired. So, the simplistic approach of using a smartphone app to calculate what you burn, and how much you should eat is fraught with errors and false hope. DOWNLOAD THE GUIDE: “Why Fasting Works – 1. A low- protein diet is a diet in which people reduce their intake of protein. A low- protein diet is prescribed for those with inherited metabolic disorders, such as Phenylketonuria and Homocystinuria and reduced protein levels have been used by people with kidney or liver disease. Low protein consumption appears to alter the risk of bone breakage, presumably through changes in calcium homeostasis. The amount used by those with liver disease would still result in individuals being in nitrogen balance. Amino acids that are excess to requirement cannot be stored, but must be modified by deamination (removal of the amine group). Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is common in the general population and has a significant medical and socioeconomic impact. Its pathophysiology is still not entirely. As this occurs in the liver and kidneys, some individuals with damaged livers or kidneys may be advised to eat less protein. Due to the sulphur content of the amino acids methionine and cysteine, excess of these amino acids leads to the production of acid through sulphate ions. These sulphate ions may be neutralized by calcium ions from bone, which may lead to net urinary loss of calcium. This might lead to reduction in bone mineral density over time. Individuals suffering from phenylketonuria lack the enzyme to convert phenylalanine to tyrosine so low levels of this amino acid need to be provided in the diet. Homocystinuria is an inherited disorder involving the metabolism of the amino acid methionine leading to the accumulation of homocysteine. Treatment includes providing low levels of methionine and high levels of vitamin B6 in the diet. Low- protein diets are in vogue among some members of the general public because of the impact of protein intake on Insulin/Insulin- like growth factor 1 Signalling (IIS) and the direct sensing of amino acid availability by mammalian target of rapamycin (m. TOR), two systems that are implicated in longevity and cancer proliferation. Russell Henry Chittenden showed that less than half that amount was needed to maintain good health. The median human adult requirement for good quality protein is approximately 0. A 7. 0 kg adult human who was in the middle of the range would require approximately 4. ![]() This would represent less than 1. William Cumming Rose and his team studied the essential amino acids, helping to define minimum amounts needed for normal health. One of the most curious diets that I The easier a diet is to follow, the better the odds of sticking to it. So user friendliness was one of the factors we considered in rating the diets. The dairy industry markets milk as the best food for healthy bones, but vegan sources for calcium are often better for your bones than milk! Kidney stones are a frequent occurrence on the ketogenic diet for epilepsy. For adults, the recommended minimum amounts of each essential amino acid varies from 4 to 3. To be of good quality, protein only needs to come from a wide variety of foods; there is neither a need to mix animal and plant food together nor a need to complement specific plant foods, such as rice and beans. Plant protein is often described as incomplete, suggesting that they lack one or more of the essential amino acids. Apart from rare examples, such as Taro. However, the relative abundance of the essential amino acids is more variable in plants than that found in animals, which tend to be very similar in essential amino acid abundance, and this has led to the misconception that plant proteins are deficient in some way. Low- protein vs calorie restriction. Increases in longevity or reductions in age- associated morbidity have also been shown for model systems where protein or specific amino acids have been reduced. In particular, experiments in model systems in rats, mice, and Drosophila fruit flies have shown increases in life- span with reduced protein intake comparable to that for calorie restriction. Restriction of the amino acid methionine, which is required to initiate protein synthesis, is sufficient to extend lifespan. None of the diets in these regions is completely based on plants, but plants form the bulk of the food eaten. However, more recent research suggests that a high protein diet is required of 1. In addition, vitamin supplements especially vitamin B group should be taken. Salt should be restricted to below 5 mg per day. This diet was a daily ration of 2,0. Calories consisting of moderate amounts of boiled rice, sucrose and dextrose, and a restricted range of fruit, supplemented with vitamins. Sodium and chloride where restricted to 1. It showed remarkable effects on control of edema and hypertension. The Rice Diet program closed in 2. Mc. Dougall's program continue to be offered for kidney disease and hypertension. Calcium loss from bone occurs at protein intake below requirement when individuals are in negative protein balance, suggesting that too little protein is dangerous for bone health. Large prospective cohort studies have shown a slight increase in risk of bone fracture when the quintile of highest protein consumption is compared to the quintile of lowest protein consumption. As protein consumption increases, calcium uptake from the gut is enhanced. However, calcium uptake from the gut does not compensate for calcium loss in the urine at protein consumption of 2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. Calcium is not the only ion that neutralizes the sulphate from protein metabolism, and overall buffering and renal acid load also includes anions such as bicarbonate, organic ions, phosphorus and chloride as well as cations such as ammonium, titrateable acid, magnesium, potassium and sodium. However, not all plant material is base forming, for example, nuts, grains and grain products add to the acid load. This table shows the grams of protein per 1. This is often found in arguments for selective consumption of plant foods to combat osteoporosis, and in arguments to choose plant foods in diets restricting methionine. However, this is not strictly true, as the following table shows. Animal protein shows a range of approximately 3% to 4% methionine plus cysteine for meat as well as for milk and dairy. Eggs have higher values in a 4% to 7% range. While many fruit and vegetables have values below 3%, values for grains, seeds, and nuts fall in the 3% to 4% range, and many exceed 4%. Dry or mature legumes have values in the range 2% to 3%, but sprouted legumes exceed 4%. The highest value is for Brazil nuts. This table shows that unless large classes of plant food are avoided, a plant- based diet is unlikely to be significantly lower in methionine and cysteine than an omnivorous diet if the same level of protein is consumed.
